Youth program May 2003

Seven young persons from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania came to Sweden for a 10 days study tour as a follow up on the Preparatory Roots Meeting at the United Nations, Nairobi earlier this year. The youth delegation visited schools and youth centers in Sweden which were part of the Study Tour to Nairobi; Stockholm, Borlänge, Strängnäs and Kalmar. The two study-tours this spring laid the foundation to establish new contacts and cooperation between schools and municipalities in the Lake Victoria and Baltic Sea regions.
The tour included visits at The Children's Ombudsman and visits to two NGO’s; International Playground Association and Keep Sweden Tidy.
In Kalmar the study tour was organized in conjunction with the youth conference: “Young Voices of the Baltic Sea” organized by the City of Kalmar. The youth were invited to the Kalmar City Hall by the Chief Executive Director of Kalmar, Mr. Roland Karlsson to present their ideas of a Lake Victoria Children and Youth Network. Youth Advisor of Kalmar Municipality Ms Charlotte Gustafsson took responsibility for the program.
Forum Syd/Sida gave financial support for the travel for the seven youth:  Ms Sharon Mwaura - Nairobi Kenya, Mr. Boyd Oyier - Kisumu Kenya, Ms Anifa Amada - Mwanza Tanzania, Mr. Rikard Akuyu - Mukono Uganda, Ms Lilliaen Babiyi - Entebbe Uganda, Ms Penina Namukulawa - Busia Uganda and Ms Fatuma Wamala - Kampala Uganda.
