150 children and leaders came to the Christmas party at the Children’s Meeting Place of Nairobi – next to the City Hall. Grilled goat meat, lots of other foods, The Fish Pond (a Swedish tradition of fishing gifts), games, drumming, dancing, face painting and candy bags made the day a success. Also groceries to some families were distributed. H-W. Mayor of Nairobi attended and his speech became a dance with the kids! All the children sent a warm THANK YOU to all supporting the party – we are sure your heard the cheers!

Börje Berglund in memoriam

Börje Berglund In Memoriam
Mr. Börje Berglund, former Town Clerk/City Director Stockholm City Hall passed away suddenly on October 9 only one week after he was the Guest of Honor at the 25th Anniversary of the Future Tree. Börje was a close and dear friend and an extraordinary supporter of the Globetree. Börje participated in all big Globetree events starting with the Future Vessel 1998 at the Stockholm Globe Arena to the World Championship in Cooperation 2008 in Uganda. Börje had a big heart for children. We miss him very much.

Future Tree 25 Year Celebration
25 years ago we had the first Future Meeting at the Stockholm Concert Hall. More than 600 children from 12 countries came and gave their response to the question: - What is of life importance for the future. Children performed the response in drama, poems, dance, music, songs and visual arts at the same stage where the Nobel Laureates receive their awards. The program ended with the planting of an ash tree next to the Concert Hall. The City of Stockholm highlighted the 25th anniversary by providing the tree with an enamel sign that tells the history of the Future Tree history and a bench that surrounds the tree.

My Life

Maisha Yangu is a performance about life in the streets. It is a story depicting a young girl who is forced to live in the streets and how she manages to survive. The actors are 4 children and 2 young adults. The show went on a tour around Sweden from April 7th to May 7th 2011. These children from Dandora, even though they are not professionally trained, have an excellent natural ability to communicate through drama and dance.

As serious as the story sounds, it involves lots of laughs and scenes that urge us to make the lives of street children in Kenya better. The story reminds us that we can’t move forward until we take care of our children.

Written and Directed by Ms Kajsa Dahlstrom – “Mama Kajsa” - actress and president of Globetree, a Swedish NGO. She interviewed many children and young people about their life in the streets. Therefore coming up with the play - a true story told by children through their own eyes. Globetree invited Maisha Yangu on tour in Sweden for one month this year. Maisha Yangu became a success and is asked to come back to Sweden next year for another tour.

We want Maisha Yangu to reach Kenyan audience and we welcome you, your friends and colleagues to the National Theatre.

THE SHOW IS FREE hence limited spaces. Please confirm your attendance for the 3pm, 5pm or 7pm show on the 20TH AUGUST 2011 @ the KENYAN NATIONAL THEATRE. To reserve a place call Mitchell 0721871217, or email us at info@maishayangu.com

My Life has now toured for the third week.
We have been 2 days in Tensta, one day in Gävle and one day in Hällefors.
On Friday we had to go to the hospital in Eskilstuna as we thought that Aneta had a couple of broken fingers. But we were fortunate, her hand was allright. On Friday eventing we made another visit to Tensta. Our new friends there showed us arround and we had a lot of fun.

My Life is now on tour. This week we have been perfroming in Sättila, Skene, Falkenberg, Varberg, Laholm, Uddevalla, KF Gymnasium in Stockholm and Dieselverkstad in Nacka. It has been a lot of traveling for us.
The students in Sweden are warm welcoming. They loved our play and we are very happy about that. We were very nervous when we had our first big performance in Falkenberg. Some questions are a little funny, some think we are living in the bush. They should come to Nairobi and see how we really live and what our life really looks like. It is tough but fun.
Milcah: The weather is very cold. It is a nice place to be because the people are very good. I have even made a couple of friends. I would like to go to college here.
Jackson: It is very interesting and enjoyable. Nice food and warm welcoming. I would love to live here forever to help street children.
Aneta: I love Sweden, I love the food. The weather is not good. I like traveling and could stay here forever.
Dennis: Sweden is a nice place because they are good people and they are more organized. I like performing here in Sweden and I would like to stay here for ever.
Vivian: I like Sweden. I have met many friends. I like the milk here in Sweden.

Blå Huset i Tensta

Children´s Garden to Sweden. Tour 19th - 30th of September
Globetree got support from the Swedish Institute with travel expenses for group of 9 children and 4 teachers/leaders from the Children’s Garden in Nairobi, Kenya. The support realizes a dream we have had in the Globetree - to organise a tour, with the Children's Garden combining performances with seminars and workshops.
The group from Children’s Garden is talented in theatre, music and dance and they will present their performance "Our Life". The play is based on their own experiences how it is to live on the streets and in their local environment.

Silver Rose Award, Brussels, 15 October 2008

See Video from Silver Rose Award
Text from www.solidar.org

Kajsa Dahlstrom, President of the organisation commented that she felt like she was receiving the Nobel Prize and stated that “The Silver Rose Award will inspire [our] vision and work”.

Globetree illustrates a positive way to promote children’s rights and participation. In keeping children at the centre of their work, Globetree works on a scientific base, using creative expressions, such as theatre, drama and art, as the key tool to mobilise and support children and their teachers in efforts to improve their lives and living environment. The idea is that adults have to learn to see how social and physical environments influence children’s behaviour; acknowledging that children included in this environment will naturally join in with decision-making processes, whilst children left outside often become a risk to themselves and others. Globetree has several international achievements and has hosted their representations in countries all over the world with the aim of bringing people together and developing a group vision of the future with the participation of children from all horizons. Their latest project was the World Championship in Cooperation hosted in Kampala, Uganda in June 2008 which intended to facilitate dialogue in a cooperative rather than competitive spirit by allowing the youth to formulate and propose solutions to issues impacting them for action and implementation-commitments from the adult stakeholders.

Feasibility study of Children’s Village in Kenya
“Rights of the Child and Cooperation with Kenya Probation Authorities on improving rehabilitation activities in selected juvenile, borstal institutions and probation hostels".
Mr. Jacky Foo has on behalf of the Globetree done a feasibility study in Kenya for a Children’s Village with support from Forum Syd, Sweden. The study was made March 13 – April 2 in collaboration with Kenyan Ministry of Home Affairs.
The goal is to have a piece of land close to Nairobi where several organizations working with children at risk can cooperate and in that way reduce costs for food and heating, have rehabilitation and vocational activities, safety and security and efficient land use.
A proposal has been made to the Kenyan Ministry of Home Affairs to establish a Children’s Village and Vocational Centre (70 acres) at Lower Kabete. The Ministry has established a Kenya Committee in Oct. 2007. There is also a report called “Children on probation and their environment at Probation Centres in Kenya”.
Children’s Garden will develop a program which will test the ideas and suggestions which was expressed and concluded in the seminar. Children’s Garden will be a test arena to see in practice what works and what doesn’t work. The children were equal partners in the seminar and in the follow up program in Children’s Garden.

The committee was formed with members from each village, decision makers, school, women and children representatives.
Voices from Plenary Meeting:
“An International meeting here in Simanjiro would be for getting together; for strong friendship, for strengthening friendship, for people from different parts of the world to share and learn about new cultures. To see what we can have together and share. To give references to traditional environmental strategies. To find solutions for environmental protection.
To find the crossroads where we meet each other.”
 “…Meeting with a connection to human roots…”
“…Thanks to Globetree nowadays most children are sent to school. No drop outs and low absence at the lessons. Now the grown ups listen to children needs and now the children can ask.”
“The Maasai culture is strong and has not allowed women and children to join meetings, but now there is a change”
“… here in Simanjiro our guests can also learn our culture”

Chrismas at Children’s Garden
During Christmas over 200 children and visitors came together to celebrate Christmas at Children’s Garden in Nairobi, Kenya. Christmas became a wonderful celebration, thanks to a separate fund-raising organised by Ms. Ann Bergerlind teacher at Katarina Norra Schol, Stockholm. Goats, good food, sweets, decorations, presents and over 100 pairs of shoes made a great Christmas celebration. They all send their warm thanks to all sponsors!

Kajsa Dahlström, presiden Globetree: “We had a lot of fun! We danced, sang, played together. Many Swedes came and all joined for a Lucia procession. One of the goats joined the Lucia and was nicely decorated. A special Shoe Song and dance was composed by Robert Wawesh and his brother. It was performed by all children on the basket field before they received their shoes.
For me this year became extra special because just before Christmas, Jackson Gacegi was released from the Youth Prison in Mombasa after 1 year and 8 months. His special wish was to come to Children’s Garden and get carpenter education. Jackson had a tough time in prison and the Christmas in Children’s Garden marked a change of his life”.

The Children’s Garden is developing by leaps and bounds. New toilets have been installed as the old ones collapsed. The program was visited together with artist and producer of music Mr. Robert W. Kiboy and his wife Ms. Lisa Forsberg in order to find new creative ways of art. Children’s Garden won a special competition this year. They were secnd in a National Competition between schools for Art.
The Baby Hope Centre was visited in its new premises where Ms. Jessica Bernestrom and her mother Monica volunteered to help for 14 days. Ms. Jane Ruvaga has now 10 abandoned babies and recently sent a SOS that the long period of rain makes it impossible to dry material nappies and the babies became sick in the cold. They have now a new washing machine and radiators in the children’s room.
Ms Jane Ramu has for a long time had problems with the school principal to accept her teaching of the deaf and blind children. It came to a point where the principal closed her classrooms. The parents took action and media raised the problem. The department is now opened again and another positive result of the attention was that Jane now has a chief position for the education of deaf and blind children.
