We could all do some useful work on this by compiling our own thoughts and suggestions, and making a set of proposals at the end of this conference.  In the UK, there are suggestions that all treated effluent should be to tertiary standards, although costs will prohibit this for the next few years.

If we could develop coherent research proposals, the potential for funding would be increased.  The UK has a 'Foresight Programme' which is looking at strategic areas of research for the next 25 years.  I believe that ecological engineering should be one of the main topics, and have a good avenue to present this in the future.  Getting the balance between ecological principles and specific detailed topics will be the key to success.
