General Information
Internet Conference On Integrated Bio-Systems
(April-Dec 1998)

The Conference is a virtual conference with papers on the web and their discussions conducted via electronic mailing lists.
Organizers
The conference is jointly organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU/IAS) of the United Nations University (Tokyo) and the UNESCO Microbial Resources Centre (MIRCEN-Stockholm)  under the framework of UNU/IAS programme on "Eco-restructuring for Sustainable Development". This conference is an activity of one of its projects called "Zero Emissions" (UNU/ZERI) which advocates zero waste and discharge concept where wastes and by-products are to be utilized and augmented into income-generating and waste minimization activities.  The conference focuses on bio-systems that utilize organic wastes.

Purpose
The purpose of the conference is to permit access via Internet to a comprehensive documentation of  past and current work on integrated bio-systems;  to enable authors to share their experiences and to interact with participants;  and to foster the development and cooperation in projects that may result from this Conference.

The conference also intends to draw the attention of funding agencies to their potential roles in funding projects on integrated bio-systems because of their increasing importance as a solution to ensure livelihood and food security of farmers and the poor as well as in providing an ecologically sound environment and to contribute to sustainable eco-development.

The Internet Conference will permit free access to information to the general public, academic institutes and any organization that is concerned with improving the environment, sustainable development, food security and production, alleviation of poverty, natural resource conservation, waste management, aquaculture, natural resource management, etc.

Scope of  Conference
The scope covers the science, technology and practice of integrated bio-systems in agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture, forestry, industry, built structures and in natural ecosystems. The conference will emphasize on the use of integrated bio-systems in human activities and their roles in creating a better environment and to sustain development.  The main conference sessions are :

* Integrated bio-systems for agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture and forestry
* Integrated bio-systems for treatment and utilization of industrial/municipal solid wastes and wastewaters
* Integrated bio-systems for management of natural resources
* Integration of bio-systems into built structures

In nature, seasonal changes may effect the availability of a resource and a change in the population of a species that use it as a food source may occur. The faith of this population is often controlled by nature. Human beings however are capable of greater control of their lives and activities, and are able to cause greater changes to the environment due to their activities. There are many consequences, one of them is the accumulation of by-products, solid and liquid wastes. Integrated bio-systems can be designed to enhance recycling of organic nutrients from by-products and wastes into biological sinks and food chains. The result is the creation of an ecologically sound and healthy environment.

e.g. sub ias-wg08 Jacky Foo, UNESCO MIRCEN

2) The Internet Conference provides the following to all participants:
- full text of papers
- mailing lists for discussion with the authors

3) The paper discussion with the author(s) will be conducted via mailing list(s) and it may last for 3-4 weeks depending on the intensity of interactions. You can participate via e-mail or via the web.  Details will be announced  by e-mail via the mailing list "IAS-WG08" or provided in the scientific programme.
Call for Papers
You are invited to make a presentation at the Internet Conference. Your presentation may be an unpublished paper or a published paper that describes or proposes integrated bio-system(s) within the scope and sessions of the conference. In the literature, systems have been designed technically for a wide variety of purposes, e.g. energy and primary food production, solid wastes and wastewater treatment and utilization. Some of the examples are fish-bivalve polyculture systems for  aquaculture; crop-mushroom-compost systems for agriculture; integrated agriculture- aquaculture systems (e.g. rice-fish systems); aquaponics and wetland systems for wastewater treatment and utilization; water quality management; solid waste treatment and utilisation (e.g. municipal solid waste-vermiculture-compost-duck systems, and livestock manure-biogas- crop/horticulture systems); etc..  It may cover aspects related to providing a greater understanding of such systems in relation to socio-economics, the role and functions of microbes, materials balance and nutrients flows, transfer of toxics in the food chains, economic analysis and assessment of whole systems, ecological bioremediation, etc.  Other systems may have a wider landscape applications, including resource management in coastal zone  aquaculture, agro-forestry, lowland-upland, urban-agriculture, lakes, villages, communities, industrial and recreation parks, cities) and those at a regional level.
