Subject:      IBS-GEN : coconut-livestock-biogas system in Samoa
From:   USP - Ajuyah <ajuyah_a@samoa.net>

Regarding the impact of the ICIBS, I have just concluded a meeting with
...(cut)...the local women group in Samoa on the integration of Cottage
oil and livestock production, I shall seek funds for this as the current
Chairman of the School Research.

In some villages in Samoa, women group extract oil from coconut using the
direct micro-extraction technique. Major input are dehusk coconut and
firewood, while major output are coconut oil and coconut meal. The proposed
integration is to feed to penned pigs coconut meal (65%), coral sand (2%),
Spent grain (15%), fish meal (10%), bone ash (3%) and garden waste (5%).
The waste from the piggery passed through a digester to produce biogas and
biofertilizer. The biogas replaces firewood as a major input and the
biofertilizer for vegetable garden. The waste from the vegetable garden
becomes part of the pigs feed. This is the major concept and technicalities
will be built around this concept. It will be my pleasure If you or anybody
can suggest modifications for improvements based on your experiences. The
chairman of the women group will be collaborating the research with me at
the rural level. Deadline for project submission is January 30th 1999.

Thanks, Asifo.
