Subject:      material flows: waste water

Dear Jacky,

Regarding your enquiry on waste water production, we would like to express the following response:

About 180 litre of water is added daily to the digester. Furthermore, some liquid (not all) is added from the urine which can roughly be about 50 litre . Thus, the total daily input of the liquid would be around 230 litre/day.  When mixed with vegetable materials, about 50% liquid effluent will be absorbed by the dried plant materials used for composting. Therefore, the quantity of the daily waste water would be around 115 litre. (our previous reply : "on 8th April" was really a typing mistake for which please apologize us!)

In case of latrine-attached plant, it becomes necessary to control the flow of water to maintain desired dilution. Thus, as a  general practice, each latrine visitor was provided with a 0.5 litre can for anal cleaning, else they would use more water making the biodigester unnecessarily more digested .

As yet, no water meter has been installed near the latrines. The user obtains water from the hand pump installed close to the installation.

 Best regards

Amrit & Upendra
