Subject:      closing this paper discussion

Hello Everyone

Dr. Punya Regmi (co-chairperson with Dr. Raul Galindo, Chile) is in Nepal now
and he has asked me to close this paper discussion session on his behalf.
Since I have not received an email from Raul Galindo, I do this on behalf of
both the co-chairpersons.

Anna Hedlund and Bui Xuan An provided us with an excellent paper for
discussion for the audience of 60 persons who represented more than 26
countries. The paper deals with a conceptual IBS for a pig-biogas-crop system
where the sub-systems are commonly practised in the village of An Son. Pigs
are fed with commercial feed with is the main input source of nutrients into
the farm. The biogas sub-system generated the fuel which is used by the
household and represents an important component that makes the nutrients in
manure available to crops (rice, vegetables and sugar cane) on the 0.5
hectares. The biogas digester provides per year 32 kg of N, 20 kg of P and
438 kg of C for the crops. The system is deficient in N.

Maintaining or improving the soil fertility in an IBS with a crop sub-system
is important. This can also be done by growing legumes (crop or trees). The
role of legume trees that provide leaves as forage is not commonly used. Thus
using legume trees for fencing can provide a dual purpose.

I take this opportunity to thank both Anna and An for the cooperation in
providing quick responses to the many questions asked by the audience. Thank
you for sharing unique and interesting information about the An Son village.
On behalf of the chairpersons, I also  thank the audience for their active
participation, questions and comments which have made this discussion a
highly interactive one.

The discussion will close by midnight today so that I can finalise the
proceedings which will be available via
http://www.ias.unu.edu/proceedings/icibs/ic-mfa/index-proc.html

I look forward to your continued participation in IBSnet via its public forum
at et-w1@segate.sunet.se
