Globetree Newsletter No.2, June 2004

INTRODUCTION by
M/s. Kajsa B. Dahlstroem,
President Globetree

Dear Friends,
For a long time we had a dream in the Globetree - to see a new Global Event where everybody is a winner - A world Championship in Cooperation. We also dreamt to see the Lake Victoria and Baltic Sea Region as the pioneering anchors in this Championship. These dreams now seem to become true.
The City of Stockholm said yes to the proposal by the Globetree to host the first World Championship in Cooperation 2006 and LVRLAC (Lake Victoria Region Local Authorities Co-operation), on their yearly Assembly, decided that Globetree would be a partner in building the Children and Youth Network between the Lake Victoria and Baltic Sea regions.
The idea of a World Championship in Cooperation is to have a complement to the numerous world competitions. Many children lack basic needs like food, water, shelter, care, education and security. All over the world there are millions of initiatives to solve problems but these initiatives are not headlines in the media and nor easily found.
The World Championship in Cooperation will have its manifestation during a week in June 2006, when anyone can share ideas, initiatives, visions, work and solutions to one another and to a wider audience all over the world. The foundation of the event is the two UN documents The Rights of the Child and Agenda 21. To bring the content into action. The themes are Environment – Diversity – Communication.
The tools are the creative body and mind, hands and feet. Individuals, families, schools, municipalities, NGO’s, institutions, business, artists…all are invited to participate. What will be your contribution?
The first exhibition of ideas will be exposed at the Stockholm Water Symposium in August followed by the Globetree yearly Globedays in October. The Global Announcement of the event takes place at the Roots Meeting at the United Nations Nairobi 13 – 19 of November. Let us know if you want to join and we will send you the program or check our web-site!
In this Newsletter we share the news of the Children’s Meeting Place in Homa Bay, Kenya and Strängnäs, Sweden. H.W. the Mayor of Busia and Mukono, Uganda together with a delegation of two teachers and a pupil from Kenya spent fourteen days in eight cities and municipalities in Sweden to exchange ideas about the future cooperation.
This and a lot more in this Newsletter! We thank you all, friends of Globetree, for your support!

# 01 World Championship in Cooperation

In April the leaders of all 6 political parties in the City of Stockholm agreed to the Globetree proposal of Stockholm being the host of the first World Championship in Cooperation. At June 17 it was decided by the City Council of Stockholm.
The guiding themes are Environment – Diversity – Communication.
Globetree believe Stockholm is a good representative for this new kind of Event as Stockholm in 1972 hosted the first International Conference on the Environment. As a follow up of that conference, UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) was founded with its head office in Nairobi, Kenya. The World Environment Day, 5th of June, was proclaimed at that occasion.
All over the world people are finding solutions to problems - creative initiatives which usually don’t find its way to the media. In June 2006 the idea is to put the limelight on the thousands of initiatives made all over the world to make our habitat a better place to live. By the World Championship in Cooperation we want to make the ideas known all over the world.
The World Championship in Cooperation makes every participant a winner. Our dream is to award everyone with a Gold Medal – a reminder of the time we united forces to bring forth new ideas and challenge lifeless structures.
In the end of August we hope to be ready with a special homepage where ideas and contribution to the World Championship in Cooperation will be presented and updated.
What will be your part of the World Championship in Cooperation? Let us know!

# 02 Lake Victoria and Baltic Sea

# 03 Coming up soon

The Stockholm Water Symposium
At the exhibition during the World Water Week August 16-19, in Stockholm, Globetree will annonce both the World Championship in Cooperation and the cooperation between Lake Victoria Region and the Baltic Sea.

The yearly Globedays
The Globedays October 15-16 is the yearly meeting with the Globetree Network. We will develop ideas of the World Championship in cooperation as well as being a Kick-off for the participants of the International Roots Meeting at the UN in Nairobi.

The International Roots Meeting
The International Roots Meeting will take place November 13-19, at the Children’s Meeting Place, which is an area around a beautiful Acacia Tree on the grounds of the United Nations in Nairobi (UNON). Globetree is authorized by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) to run this place on the UNON. The Children’s Tree is also called The Mother Tree.
The Roots of the Children’s Tree are concerned adults around the world. The assignment of The Roots is to be the foundation for children when they are confronted with difficulties. In the Roots Meeting we will find creative and empowering ways how to implement the two UN-documents The Rights of the Child and Agenda 21 into practical actions towards the Millennium goals.

# 04 Inauguration of the Children's Meeting Place, Homa Bay, Kenya
The idea of having a place for dialogue between children and decision makers is spreading in the Lake Victoria Region and Sweden.
Globetree was invited to Homa Bay when H.W. the Mayor of Homa Bay Dr. Stephen Agullo Peter, February 26, handed over a large area in the Jamhuri Park to be the Children’s Meeting Place. Children from many schools thanked the Mayor for their new ground with songs, dances, poetry and drama. Many of the children shared their concern for the environment and their sadness and fear for HIV/Aids.
The tree chosen as the Children’s Meeting Place was a hardy indigenous species in the region known as mtalawanda in Swahili, a Markhamia tree (Markhamia lutea). The tree was chosen for its strength and ability to withstand the tough periods. To make it easier for the children to meet closer to the Mayor’s office, another tree was inaugurated. It is a Naboom tree (Euphorbia candelabrum). Children love to play under this tree as it is always a cool place when the sun is hot.
