Project 4:

Income from backyard rabbit keeping as a method to reduce primary school drop outs in Ndekero village, Meru District, Kenya

Funding: ORSKOV Foundation (UK)

Project Period: June 2010- Feb 2011

Problem: Our Lady of Annunciation Primary School is run by the Nazareth Sisters. It gets no support from the government because it is classified as a private school. Even with  subsidised cost, many farm families dont have the cash to pay the full school fees (~1000 Ksh per month; ~13.00 USD). The school services include lunch and all materals.

Proposed Approach: The concept is "children helping children" and "children helping their parents".

Activities:
(i) backyard rabbit keeping at home
(ii) allotment garden at school
(iii) use of rabbit skin
