Dibaokotu Plant Nursery
The plant nursery was
started in 1999 by PACIDA (Pastoralist Community Initiatives and Development
Assistance) in cooperation with FARM Africa and GTZ as a "Cash for Work" and
"Food for Work" programs that aimed at providing seedlings to the community.
This plant nursery is managed by a local women's group and children help to
water the plants.
The Algaroba plant
was introduced as a fast growing plant but it was later found to have poisonous
thorns to both animals and people. These are now being replaced with other beneficial plants.
Acacia
trees are usually cut for fencing of their livestock "bomas" and the plant
nursery would provide the community with seedlings. The Plant nursery also
have medicinal plants.
Future Development There is a need to establish more plant
nurseries as some nomadic people have started to settle in permanent villages
due to drought and tribal conflict. This trend has increased the demand for
firewood.
