ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES IN MAIKONA, EAST KENYA

Mini-Dams in Baqaqa, Hurri Hills, Maikona Division

There are several under-ground tanks that captures storm water from hill slopes in Hurri Hills. Near the village of Baqaqa, there are two mini dams built at "Shi-Baqaqa" in 2007 by EU, Cordaid and PISP.

'

The second mini-dam is larger (information on the water holding capacity of the 2 mini-dams are not available). The mini-dams provide 2½ months supply of water and suffers from heavy sedimentation especially in the first dam. It is anticipated that this will be filled in 3-4 years. A nearby under-ground tank also provides another month of water supply to 400 families at Baqaqa but when 12 other villages run out of water, they would come to Shi-Baqaqa.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

Maikona Parish has a church in Baqaqa and supports a nursery school and a primary school (Class 1 and Class 2). A meeting with the village chief was conducted to identify another site for a mini-dam. A site at Dhao was identified to be suitable. Mr Godana will talk to the other 12 village elders about constructing a wide embankment (5 m wide). PACIDA will facilitate in the agreement and even if not all the 12 village elders are not involved, an alternative plan for those interested can be made. Maikona Parish will provide digging tools for a community effort to  clean up the current pool area and start to build a 2 meter high and 25 m long embankment.
This activity will be incorporated into a grant application that is currently being prepared by Maikona Parish and Globetree.
